Willie Beamen
Bio

When you've been handed as many life blows as Hip-Hop lyricist William "Willie Beamen" Amosun has, it would be easy to throw the mic down and call it a day. But the self-proclaimed champion for the underdogs refuses to let his past circumstances keep him from achieving greatness, much like Jamie Foxxs' character in the movie Any Given Sunday, the inspiration behind his industry moniker. Willie Beamen was underestimated in the movie, explains the articulate 24 year-old. "He never got a chance to shine, never got a chance to play; but once he got a shot, he made the most of it and people looked up to him. He became a leader. Thats what I am doing; making the most of my shot".

Born in Worcester, MA to a mother with a substance abuse problem and no interest in being a nurturer, Willie Beamen rebelled as a kid. At 10, he was caught shoplifting and ran away from home to stay with an uncle; at 12, he was rushed to the hospital with a broken jaw at the hands of a visiting adult and was immediately taken out of that environment. It was catastrophic, recalls Willie Beamen of the incident that required him to have his jaw realigned and wired. "They deemed my uncles home unfit and because of the shoplifting incident a few years prior I was already involved in youth services, so they placed me in jail until they found a place to put me. I definitely had resentment about that". From 13-17 years-old, the depressed teenager was taken in by a Caucasian family who were pleasant yet indirectly alienated him, further adding to his emotional distress. And if that wasn't enough to cause a mental and physical downward spiral, upon his move to Atlanta in 2007, his house along with his possessions was consumed in a fire. "I don't use whats happened to me as an excuse; I use it as motivation to do better and be better and talk about different concepts with my music".

Willie Beamen, who always felt silent, found his voice in writing and music followed shortly thereafter. Being that he was considered a social misfit as a child, penning poetry became a conduit of self-expression when he couldn't articulate his thoughts into words. That art form blossomed into a full-fledged gift; a therapeutic outlet to funnel his pinned up anger, bitterness, frustration and resentment, as well as offer universal messages of hope, faith, persistence and triumph over tragedy. "I started expressing my serious love for hip hop at 16 through listening to albums like Jay Zs Reasonable Doubt, which helped me get through tough times because we connect emotionally through music. Even though I didn't do those things he rapped about, I felt like I could be a different voice and talk about things that would resonate with people and they could enjoy".

Inspired by the perfectionism of Michael Jackson, the lyrical prowess of Kanye West, Big L, Eminem and Nas and the songwriting genius of Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, it is fair to say that Willie Beamen is a student of quality music. However, in the near future, the multi-faceted talent plans to stretch his artistic muscles and try acting, producing, novel writing and possibly sports commentating. Even the sky can't limit him. "I want to be proof that you can come from any type of circumstance and still succeed. Intially at age 13 I was told by doctors that my jaw would never completely heal; I went back at age 20 and was informed it's 100% healed. I'm proud of that accomplishment everyday".

From a rocky, violent and demeaning childhood, Willie Beamen is proof positive of what faith in oneself can accomplish. This clever wordsmith is finally on the fast track to getting the recognition he so rightfully deserves. "I don't want the fame, I just want respect. I've been on a lifelong search for it and I try to be respectful to others. I just hope it comes back to me in some form".
